Richard Pyle, MD, ARCS Scholar Award

Field of Study: Biomedical Engineering

Elizabeth (Lizzy) graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with a degree in Biomedical Engineering (BME) in 2017. She played varsity soccer at Washington University and the team won the NCAA Division III National Championship last fall. In October 2017, Lizzy was named the NCAA Woman Athlete of the Year for all divisions and sports.

Lizzy is a second-year graduate student in the BME PhD program at UMN and is a member of Dr. Dave Wood’s Living Devices Lab. Lizzy’s research project focuses on studying cancer cell migration using microfluidic device technology. Her goals in graduate school include contributing to cancer research through the development of novel 3D microfluidic devices to interrogate metastasis, holding officer roles in the Graduate Women in Biomedical Engineering (GWBME) and BME Colloquium graduate student groups, volunteering in clubs like Science for All and MNDrive to promote STEM education in high schools, and playing on the BME intramural soccer team!

Lizzy’s ultimate passion is to be an advocate for individuals, in particular young women, seeking to achieve their full potential, whether that be in the classroom, within the community, or in athletics.
