David Bernlohr PhD, Scientist of the Year 2024

Dr. Bernlohr is the Distinguished McKnight Professor and Head of the Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biophysics (BMBB). He also holds the Cargill Chair in Systems Biology of Human Metabolism, serves as a precept for in the Combined MD/PhD Training Program for Medical Scientists, and is part of the graduate faculty for the PhD Program in Integrative Biology and Physiology.

Among his many awards, Dr. Bernlohr has been named an American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Fellow for his contributions to the field of biochemistry and advancements in the fields of diabetes, obesity and metabolism. In addition, he is leading a $20 million NIH-funded study of human cell aging at the University of Minnesota.

Dr. Bernlohr’s laboratory studies the metabolic relationships between obesity, aging and disease.
